Social Context Exam Question (Cuffs)

Explain how social contexts influence television programmes. Refer to 'Cuffs' from the 2010's to support your answer.

Social context are how media products reflect the society in which they are produced and that of their target audience.

One way social contexts has influenced television programs is because there has been a significant rise in hate crime in society in recent years. This is reflected in the show 'Cuffs' (2015), in which there is an example of hate crime towards a muslim boy. 'Cuffs' reflects this rise in society and is demonstrated because of how the group of people stabbed the muslim boy in a shop. This is an example of how the criminals in 'Cuffs' believe that all muslims are 'terrorists' because of the recent rise in terrorism during those years. This incident in the program also relates to how the rise in knife crime has influenced television programmes.

Another way social contexts has influenced television programmes is because of the increasing acceptance of different sexualities in society. This is demonstrated in 'Cuffs' because one of the main characters, Jake, plays the role of a high-ranked police officer. 'Cuffs' supports and normalises same sex relationships due to the fact that Jake is a homosexual. 'Cuffs' was released in 2015, just one year after same sex marriage was legalised in the UK.

Another way social contexts has influenced television programmes is because of the rise of multiculturalism. In 'Cuffs', there are many different characters of different ethnicities and race. For example, Ryan, one of the main characters; a black, high-ranked police officer, and Meesha, a muslim community officer; a positive character that helps out within the society. 'Cuffs' supports the presence of the many different cultural or ethnic groups in society as the characters play a positive role in the program.
