Cuffs exam style question

Cuffs Exam Style Question - Analyse how representation is used in Cuffs to create meaning for a mainstream pre watershed audience?
Watershed - a set time period in which programmes deemed unsuitable for children may be broadcast on TV from 9:00-5:30.

Representation has been used in Cuffs to create meaning towards the audience as Cuffs has challenged the typical stereotype of homosexuality. This is because one of the main characters, Jake, is gay and works within the higher ranks of the police force. This challenges the typical stereotype of homosexuality, in which they are usually disregarded because of the media's typical intolerance towards them. Cuffs challenges the dominant representation of homosexuality in the media, and is acceptable for a pre-watershed audience (appropriate for children), as this supports and normalises same sex relationships due to the fact that Jake, a homosexual, is within the higher ranks of the police force.
